More classic Thad Jones for you.
Here’s an example of the beauty and genius of Charles Mingus’s composing.
Mingus never recorded “Chair in the Sky” himself, but lovely versions can be found on albums by Mingus Dynasty, Joni Mitchell, and the Mingus Big Band. Every time I hear it, the melody runs through my mind for days afterwards.
One of my favorite tunes. It can be found on Michele Rosewoman’s live album Guardians of the Light.
A while back I mentioned that someday I would post this song, and now that day has come.
The tune is from Lee Morgan’s Live at the Lighthouse album, which features some very creative writing and playing from Bennie Maupin. “Neophilia” features Bennie’s bass clarinet, an instrument I wish was better represented in jazz.
35 years after the original recording, Bennie reprised the tune with his own group, this time as a simple groove in 7/4.
